The state of Food and Agriculture- 2014- FAO

This report analyses family farms and the role of innovation in ensuring global food security, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. As more than 500 million family farms manage the majority of agricultural land in the world and produce most of our food. Therefore, family farmers are needed to ensure global food security, to protect and take care of natural environments and to end poverty, malnutrition and undernourishment. These goals can only be achieved if family farms are supported with public policies and improve their productivity and sustainability.

The report argues that support must be given to family farms for sustainable intensification of production and livelihood improvements. Hence they can innovate by improving their production and farm management practices.
