Agriculture-nutrition linkages: Linking agriculture and food security to nutrition improvement

This desk review aims to providing insights and evidence on the linkages between programmes and interventions in agricultural development and food security and nutrition improvement of vulnerable groups.

The desk review was undertaken as a first step in an exercise in which in two pilot countries the possibilities for actually linking nutritional objectives to programmes in food security development were explored. 

Viewing agriculture nutrition linkages along the smallholder value chain

This report is a synthesis of existing global knowledge on improving nutrition through agriculture using a smallholder value chain approach. The smallholder value chain model used by the desk review concentrates on both producers and consumers and is centred around three pathways: improved nutrition resulting from increased production for own consumption, improved nutrition through increased income from selling agricultural products, and improved nutrition through increased income resulting from farmers’ involvement in local or regional procurement programs.

Increasing cash crop productivity through improved nutrition: A call to action

This series of concept briefs analyse the cocoa, coffee and tea production statistics compared with nutritional data in major producing countries for these agricultural cash crops. It demonstrates the consequences of under-nutrition for the sector. Maps initially present the dimensions of under-nutrition in cash crop producing areas in developing countries. After which interventions for combining Good Agricultural Practice with Good Nutritional Practices are outlined.
